Thirty-one people were officially declared dead as a result of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
That number has remained unchanged since 1987.
However, the catastrophe undoubtedly caused the deaths and premature deaths of many, many more. Estimates range from around 4,000 up to 93,000.
If not for the bravery of many who risked their lives in the aftermath, it could have been millions.
In new hard-hitting Sky Atlantic/ HBO drama Chernobyl, writer Craig Mazin plans to bring "the untold true" story of the world's worst nuclear disaster to the fore.
Starring Jared Harris, Stellan Skarsgard, Emily Watson and Jessie Buckley, Chernobyl is set to be one of the most chilling, thought-provoking dramas you will see this year.
Sky News spoke to Mazin and also to Harris, who plays Soviet nuclear physicist and "hero" Valery Legasov, about the show.
"Chernobyl, this series, stemmed from a simple question," says Mazin. "How did this happen? We know what happened, but not how.
"This is a story about humanity and the cost of lives; a story about the worst that humans can do, but also the best."
