Wole Soyinka: Nigeria is building a generation of illiterates

Prof Wole Soyinka says Nigeria is currenlty raising a generation of illiterates.

Making particular reference to Internet trolls, the Nobel laureate said the nation is raising a generation that is the first to comment on the internet on issues they are deeply ignorant about.

He made this remark when he spoke at the launch of InnoCreativa Youth Hub 2030 and project logo by Creative Youth Community Development Initiative (CYCDI) held at The Civic Centre, Lagos.

“They are waiting for Wole Soyinka to lead a march to Aso Rock. It is about time to get off your feet and stop writing rubbish on the internet about things you do not understand. I do not know how to describe the new generation beyond a generation of internet trolls.
“Nigerian youths are full of spunk outside, but when they are inside Nigeria, they are full of gas. We are building a generation of illiterates. They are the first to comment on the internet on issues they are ignorant about. When you talk about education, I get texts from the new generation and can’t believe these texts are from the youth.
“When I decided to build my house in the forest, I bought a second-hand diesel generator and asked someone to dig a borehole. I wanted to be self-sufficient. What I want to pass on to you is that I thought of the possibility of being self-reliant. This entails that I can come to cooperatives with others and demand things from the government by any means necessary.” Soyinka said

Preparing for a Study Abroad Program if You Have a Physical Disability

INSIDER SECRET: If you’re considering a study abroad program, make sure you carry a credit card with no foreign transaction fees so you can save money and stretch your budget further.
Study abroad programs have a lot to offer. You’ll have the opportunity to meet new friends, make new connections and broaden your horizons by immersing yourself in a completely different culture.
If you have a physical disability, you shouldn’t let that stand in the way of all the great things a study abroad program has to offer. With the right precautions and preparation, you’ll be able to make the most of your experience.
Here is our guide on how you can set yourself up for success if you have a physical disability and are considering a study abroad program:
Choose Your Destination Wisely
Different countries vary in the resources and accommodations available to those traveling with a disability. While the US has regulations like the Americans with Disabilities Act that require businesses to provide certain accommodations such as wheelchair ramps and elevators, other countries may not have as robust of a system in place.
To minimize the chances of complications, choose a study abroad program in a country that’s particularly known for accessibility, like these 9 very wheelchair accessible locations overseas:
  • Sydney, Australia
  • London, England
  • Vienna, Austria
  • Barcelona, Spain
  • Hong Kong
  • Paris, France
  • Ireland
  • Amsterdam, Netherlands
  • Melbourne, Australia
You can also consult with your university’s study abroad program office to get an idea of how wheelchair-friendly a country will be. They can fill you in on what to expect and what you’ll need to keep in mind to be fully prepared.
A few additional considerations they may speak with you about:
  • Service animals: If you’ll be traveling with a service animal, you may need to find out if they’re allowed in public areas such as businesses and restaurants.
  • Wheelchair ramps and elevators: If you’ll be using a wheelchair, you may want to do some research on the terrain. How difficult will it be for you to get around? Are there any laws requiring businesses to have wheelchair ramps, and can you reliably count on elevators being available?
  • Medications: If you will be needing any types of medications, you’ll want to make sure your prescriptions are allowed by local law. If they are, will you have any trouble getting them refilled?

Financing Options

Scholarships and Grants

Scholarships and grants are available to those who have certain disabilities, and these funds can go a long way in covering any expenses you may have in the program.
Here are two helpful websites you can use to find scholarships:
Each scholarship has its own eligibility criteria and application process, along with details about how the funds can be used. Each scholarship has its own separate application process, and although this can be a tedious process, the payoff can be well worthwhile.

Credit Cards

If you’re considering a study abroad program, you’ll also want to carry one of the best credit cards for students.
Credit cards can go a long way in easing the financial burden of a study abroad program. Just make sure you pay off the balance in full every month and on time.
  • Make sure you carry a credit card with no foreign transaction fees. It may not seem like much at the time, but these fees add up over time and can really eat away at your budget.
  • Credit cards with high cash back earnings rates can also help soften the blow of your expenses abroad.
  • Some credit cards offer amazing perks to make your travel experience more pleasant. If you carry one of thebest travel credit cards you can expect perks like TSA PreCheck and airport lounge access that will allow you to speed through security more quickly and relax in a nice quiet area with food and drinks before your flight.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance will pay for certain non-refundable expenses in the event you are unable to make your trip. You should consider this if you’ll be investing a sizeable amount of money and are worried about possibly having to cancel.
If you do decide to purchase a separate travel insurance policy, make sure to read the fine print so you understand when coverage applies and under what circumstances.
Remember if you make your travel purchases with one of the best credit cards for students, travel insurance might already be included. Here are just a few cards that have some form of trip cancellation and trip interruption coverage:

Special Considerations Based on Disability

If you’re interested in a study abroad program, you may need to take additional precautions depending on the specific nature of your disability.

Physical

Once you land in your study abroad country, you’ll want to think about your wheelchair’s physical characteristics and how easy and comfortable it will be to get around depending on the terrain of the country. For instance, if it’s a motorized wheelchair, how long will the batteries last? Can you look into batteries that last longer, or can be more easily swapped out during the day?

Visual

If you have any type of visual impairment, making sure your luggage is easily identifiable at the airport can save you a lot of time and stress. You can wrap colored tags around your luggage or purchase luggage that’s a particularly unique, bright color. Once you land in your study abroad country, it will help you quickly locate your luggage so you can be on your way.
Safety is of the utmost importance. Traffic laws differ depending on the country, so make sure you understand the basics so that you can cross the street safely. Carry a cane if you find that it helps you get around more safely.

Deaf/Hard of Hearing

If you’re concerned you might miss important announcements at the airport because of a hearing issue, your phone can serve as an excellent tool. Set up text alerts, have your airline status bookmarked to your phone and double-check the flight status screens once you arrive at the airport. Flights get delayed, and boarding times and gate locations change all the time.
Depending on how reliant you are on a hearing aid, consider packing extra batteries as a a backup when you’re out exploring the city.

Service Animals

Each country has its own requirements when it comes to service animals and pets. If you’ll be traveling internationally with a service animal, research your specific study abroad country’s requirements. The process of obtaining vaccinations and health records for animals can be quite lengthy, so get this process started at least a few months before your study abroad program begins.
Know that a mandatory quarantine period may be required for your service animal depending on the country you’ll be traveling to.
You’ll also want to find out how service animals are treated in your study abroad country. For instance, will they be allowed to accompany you in stores and restaurants? If not, what alternative arrangements can you make ahead of time?

Bottom Line

You can get a lot out of study abroad programs, and you shouldn’t let any type of disability hold you back from this wonderful experience of meeting new people and experiencing a different culture.
If you’ll be traveling with a physical disability, you can make things a little easier on yourself by choosing a country that’s easier to get around. And definitely do your research to see how your study abroad country handles items like service animals, prescription drugs and traffic control.
Finally, use all of the financial tools at your disposal. Take the time to apply for scholarships and grants, and make sure you pack one of the best credit cards for students so you can avoid foreign transaction fees and earn rewards for your daily expenses.
With the right preparation, you’ll be able to get the most out of your study abroad program with minimal hassle.

FG announces plans to employ all qualified and licenced teachers in the country

FG announces plans to employ all qualified and licenced teachers in the country

Sonny Echono, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education has confirmed that every qualified and licenced teacher would be employed as part of efforts to rid the system of unqualified teachers.

He said this while monitoring the May Diet of the Teachers Professional Qualifying Examination (PQE) organised by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) in Abuja on Saturday.
“We are dead serious about implementing the policy and we are also working very hard to ensure that we also are ready. The first thing that is going to happen is that TRCN and NTI are compiling a database of qualified teachers, those that have been certified, those who have taken this examination who are unemployed.
“And we are going to do it and even segregate them state by state and make them available to each state. That is going to be the starting point, that anybody who has been certified as a teacher should be employed because we have no excuse for that. We have a huge debt of qualified teachers, so all those that we have should be engaged to work, and all those who are not qualified we are sorry, we have to move them out of the system.
“Yes, there may be some issues relating to the number, that is why we want to ramp up the production process, we are taking so many measure. And, enforcement is very key. We have taken two steps towards ensuring enforcement. We have upgraded what we call quality assurance department. It used to be called inspectorate, we now have state offices in all the states of the federation.
“The second step is to re-establish the secondary education commission. It has just been approved by Mr President to come on board and we are working out the modalities for how they will operate. What they will be doing, apart from mobilising additional resources to that segment of our education sector, they will be enforcing standards. Indeed we are looking at even the possibility of collapsing our quality control and inspectorate division with the commission, to ensure we effectively monitor together with our colleagues in the state.
Echono reiterated that the deadline for flushing unqualified teachers from the classrooms remains December 31, adding that additional diets of the PQE may be conducted in order for teachers to meet up with the deadline.

The Permanent secretary commended TRCN for the smooth and simplified process of the examination describing it as being up to international standards. “As you can see, it is all electronic. There are no huge crowd or delays; you come in, do your biometrics and when you log in, your picture is displayed. So, there is no issue of anyone sitting on your behalf.’’
30,000 teachers wrote the examination in 50 centres nationwide.

MARRIED IN SCHOOL BUT SINGLE AT HOME

Welcome to Nigeria campuses where little girls are practising 'wifely functions'! Just visit the boys' hostels and you would be disappointed to find out that it is now common for a girl to live in with a course mate. It is now common for her lover to give her the popular compliment 'you look sexy my girl' and she would gladly reply 'thank you honey' with a flirty voice and a romantic smile. Who is her lover? A 300 level student whose CGPA is barely up to 1.78! And they are aiming for the next best couple award for the session by the departmental association. So, the girl need to live in with him to prepare along. What nonsense! It seems that some girls suddenly loose their senses immediately they gain admission. I've seen that some of them have no more sense of caution, honour and dignity. They would change their wardrobes and acquire a new set of make ups just to look 'campussy' and sexy enough for the guys. In months, they would start sleeping around with little boys. I mean boys who collect pocket money from their uncles! Dirty boys who most of the time are infected with sexually transmitted diseases. Hey! I want you to know that you were sent to school to obtain a degree not a disease. The campus is called a school! school! not sex house! You are on campus to receive education not ejaculation. You are here to master the use of a pen not the pleasures of a penis. Wake up girl! Do some thinking!. Your future is greater than the 'best couple award'. You cook for a boy you are more intelligent than. You give your virginity to a boy who will definitely leave you after graduation. You play wife to a boy who cannot even care for himself. Oh, you have given too much. Enough! Open your eyes! Can't you see you're being foolish? You are passing through the fears of unwanted pregnancies yet you are opening your legs to a coward who cannot stand before your father. And when you eventually gets pregnant, he would brutally advise you to abort it. I rest my case here.
