Microsoft Xbox head and executive vice-president of Gaming at Microsoft Phil Spencer announces the new Xbox Project Scarlett console at their press event ahead of the E3 gaming convention in Los Angeles on June 9, 2019

The console, known as Project Scarlett, will be the "most powerful and highest-performing console" Microsoft has ever made.

The latest Xbox console will be launched at the end of next year, Microsoft has announced.

The tech firm described the console, known as Project Scarlett, as the "most powerful and highest-performing console" they have ever made.

A new streaming service, Project xCloud, will also be launched in October. It will start with a preview letting players stream games from an Xbox One console to a mobile device.

Details about the new Xbox were given during an event in Los Angeles ahead of the opening of video games convention E3.

The price was not revealed but the Xbox One X launched in November 2017 at a cost of $499 and £449.

Microsoft Xbox head and executive vice-president of gaming Phil Spencer said Project Scarlett and Project xCloud were the "foundation of our future in console and the formation of our future in cloud".

The new console will be four times more powerful than the current generation Xbox One X, he added, and will be released alongside a new game - Halo Infinite.

The Infinix Smart 3 Plus is the new benchmark for top quality within the entry level smartphone category

The Infinix Smart 3 Plus is the new benchmark for top quality within the entry level smartphone category

It is a known fact that a smartphone is as good as its features and the extent of its overall functionality stems from questions consumers ask such as “How fast is its speed of connectivity, how clear are pictures taken with the camera, how sleek is its design, how strong is the battery etc”. Such questions engulf the mind of tech consumers when presented with the option of purchasing a new smartphone.
It is very evident that the smartphone ecosystem is not what it used to be, as the market has become immensely competitive.
However, whilst most smartphones currently in circulation might come across as having the best delivery features on paper but poor execution during the user experience phase, one smartphone that transcends just being another phone is the recently released device from Infinix Mobility called Smart 3 Plus.

Be transformed to be Smarter with the Power of Infinix Smart 3 Plus

The Smart series which is an entry level smartphone brand from Infinix emanated in 2017 with a device called Smart X5010 that shook the field of smartphone creation due to its spectacular features and surprisingly affordable price.
The Infinix Smart 3 Plus represents more than just another smartphone. It is embedded with features to fortify the user with a level of smartness needed to be successful and live the smart lifestyle.
The thirst to be smarter can only be derived from a person’s accessibility to information. Waiting for a long time for an online page to load can be rather frustrating, hence the initiative by Infinix to integrate the dual sim 4G LTE connectivity into the Smart 3 Plus device.
Other specifications on the 6.2 include: 6.21-inch HD+ screen size, Waterdrop display screen, 3500mAh battery, Android™ 9 Pie based on XOS 5.0, 16GB+2GB/32GB+2GB/32GB+3GB, MTK6761 processor, Face ID and fingerprint sensor for improved security.
In summation, The Smart 3 Plus comes with features that are fit for a high-end smartphone but possess the price tag of an entry level smartphone series and particularly for this football season purchase any Infinix Smartphone to qualify for a chance to win an all expense paid trip to Egypt.

In the camera sect, there is an 8MP lowlight selfie camera with dual LED flash and triple rear cameras. There are also camera sub features and effects such as bokeh effect, portrait mode and so much more for variations that portray high quality imagery.

Twitter summoned to Indian Parliament over alleged anti-BJP bias

Representatives of Twitter have been summoned to appear before an Indian Parliamentary panel following complaints that the platform is biased against pro-ruling party and right-wing content.

The announcement was posted on Twitter by Anurag Thakur, the head of the Parliamentary Committee on Information Technology and a member of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ruling Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party.
BJP spokesman Tajinder Pal Singh Bagga, who recently organised a protest in relation to the issue, accused Twitter of shutting down pro-BJP and right-wing accounts.
Committee member, Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, also from the BJP, told broadcaster NDTV that the move was in response to complaints of a “partisan approach’’ and “ideological bias’’ by those managing content on Twitter.
Officials from Twitter will appear before the panel on Feb. 11, to discuss “safeguarding citizens’ rights on social/online news media platforms.’’
The panel would also examine a “range of issues’’ which include the problem of fake news ahead of India’s general elections scheduled to take place by May, the Times of India daily reported.
A Twitter spokesperson said the company had no comment other than to confirm that “discussions with the government are ongoing.’’
Social media is playing an increasing important role during elections in India in recent years, with leaders, including Modi, commanding huge numbers of followers.
As many as seven million tweets were generated during elections in five Indian states this winter, according to the micro-blogging site. (dpa/NAN)

Cryptocurrency exchange founder's death locks $140m - Quadriga

Man's hand holding 'bitcoin' over laptop keyboard

Canada's largest cryptocurrency exchange is unable to access millions in digital currency following the sudden death of its founder.
Quadriga has filed for creditor protection and estimates that about C$180m ($137m; £105m) in cryptocurrency coins is missing.
It has not been able to locate or secure its cryptocurrency reserves since Gerald Cotten died in December.
Cotten, 30, had sole responsibility for handling the funds and coins.
In court documents filed with the Nova Scotia Supreme Court on 31 January, his widow Jennifer Robertson, says the laptop on which Cotten "carried out the companies' business is encrypted and I do not know the password or recovery key".
"Despite repeated and diligent searches, I have not been able to find them written down anywhere," the affidavit states.
The company hired an investigator to see if any information could be retrieved but ongoing efforts have had only "limited success in recovering a few coins" and some information from Cotten's computer and phone.
The company is also investigating whether some of the cryptocurrency could be secured on other exchanges, according to court files.
They say about 115,000 Quadriga users hold balances in their personal accounts in the form of cash obligations and cryptocurrency.
The company estimates it owes about C$250m ($190m; £145m) - including C$70m in hard currency.
The affidavit says the majority of the cryptocurrency was kept by Quadriga in a "cold wallet" or "cold storage", which is located offline and used to secure cryptocurrency from hacking or theft.
Liquidity problems for the British Columbia-based company began in January 2018 when Canadian bank CIBC froze C$25.7m linked to its payment processor after the bank had difficulty determining who were the owners of the money.
Those problems have been compounded by Cotten's passing.
The founder died unexpectedly due to complications with Crohn's disease while travelling in India, according to court documents.
In a statement posted online last Thursday, Quadriga said it is working to address its "liquidity issues, which include attempting to locate and secure our very significant cryptocurrency reserves held in cold wallet".
The company is due in court in Nova Scotia on Tuesday for a preliminary hearing on appointing firm Ernst and Young as an independent monitor to oversee the proceedings.

Your body is driving a new wave of AR, VR experiences

Inside the softly glowing room, I pace around a table with an iPhone to reveal an augmented-reality mystery. Digital characters on my screen drop breadcrumbs for me to follow back to the scene of a murder. As I trace their trail of clues, my movements make everything around me change -- the lights, the scenes, the sounds I hear in my ears.
The use of movement and location to direct the flow of the story is one of the key elements of The Dial, the brainchild of Peter Flaherty. While he wanted to incorporate augmented reality, which overlays digital media on top of the real world, and projection mapping, which shrink-wraps video onto physical objects, the most important technology for telling his story is one we're already constantly using: our own bodies.
"The more your body's engaged in any interactive or immersive form, the more meaningful it is," Flaherty said in an interview at the Sundance Film Festival on the night before the fest opened late last month. "Those choose-your-own-adventures -- where you choose A or B, pathway one or two -- for me is never that exciting. But if you're actually kinesthetically moving your body, you're engaged."
At the festival's New Frontier showcase of tech-heavy immersive projects, pieces like The Dial are using participants' bodies as the primary mechanism for how they work. Instead of bathing you in passive immersion or forcing fiddly game controllers into your hands, creators are nesting unfamiliar tech with an instrument -- your body -- that's as familiar as the back of your hand. Literally.
Their hope is to make projects utilizing augmented and virtual reality -- once hot tech trends still struggling to find their way to consumers -- more engrossing. VR and AR could use all the help they can get to actually fulfill their promise of offering us radically different and immersive experiences. The trend could, at the same time, restore some of the connection we've lost to our physical selves that tech has cleaved away.
"It's a critical moment culturally with the advent of spatial computing and the advent of also machine learning, for us ... to put the body back at the center of the potential relationship of technology and humans," said Melissa Painter, another creator whose project, Embody, is featured at Sundance. "Flat out, people's physical relationship to their own body has somehow been stripped out of the equation."

My technology, myself

Inside the glowing room-sized cube of The Dial, one viewer -- dubbed the navigator -- and two other people walk around a table with iPhones that reveal augmented-reality characters acting around a projection-mapped miniature house. The AR and projections reveal the characters and the sets, but the story's scenes are unlocked depending on where the navigator decides to move.
It's a little like walking in front of an automatic sliding door at a supermarket, except instead of opening the entrance to a store, you awaken a new scene to play out.
Your movements also sync with changing colors of light in this glowing cube. When you stand to the south of the miniature house, the lights turn pale blue to match the winter's night setting of all the scenes that take place there. If you stand to the west of the house, the lights turn orange with long shadows to suggest the autumn afternoon.
All these high-tech orchestrations are designed to happen naturally as you follow whatever path through the story you want to take. Slowly, you unravel an interactive mystery centered on a woman who smashes through the stone wall outside her family home, exposing the underbelly of a formerly wealthy family.
Flaherty hoped that the end result would be an engrossing story that has an actual arc. Making movements central to the story would allow the interactive methodology starts to "disappear," he said.
"They're not focused on trying to break the tech, they're not focused on trying to push the buttons," Flaherty said of his hypothesis for the project.
Painter, on the other hand, purposely wanted to avoid telling a story with Embody, an experience that feels like going on a fantasy yoga retreat. (Note that even somebody like me, who is terrible at yoga, wanted to do it again.) Her design was to create something that felt like a product of the future rather than storytelling of the future.

9Mobile adds 1 million subscribers in 6wks, says Adrian Wood’s Teleology Holdings unserious

9mobile

9mobile yesterday officially reacted to the alleged withdrawal of Teleology from the company, saying the company represented by former MTN chief Executive, Adrian Wood, was unserious and did not help much in acquiring 9Mobile.

The company said it has managed to add about one million subscribers to make a total of 16 million subscribers on the network without the input of Adrian Wood or his Teleology Holdings Inc.
In a statement signed by 9Mobile’s Director, Regulatory and Corporate Affairs, Oluseyi Osunsedo, the company said: ” Teleology Nigeria Limited is a consortium including several local and foreign investors. While every partner in the consortium was delivering and meeting their obligations to the partnership in terms of financial resources, physical availability for crucial meetings and extensive network to help build the business, Mr. Adrian Wood’s Teleology Holdings Limited, which only owned a minority stake in Teleology Nigeria Limited, failed severally and wholly to meet theirs. Mr. Wood was not personally present for all the critical presentations made by the consortium during the bid process and failed abjectly with his financing arrangements with Swiss-based UBS Bank. In all these failings, other partners in the consortium filled the gap and pushed ahead until the sale was completed.
“Since taking over the company, and without any assistance from Mr. Wood or Teleology Holdings, the Board has revived and enhanced relationships with key vendors and core business accounts; improved business relationships with suppliers; enhanced its core network capabilities to deliver network efficiency competitively with other operators. With the assistance of leading global consultants, the company is also undertaking a complete review of its operational, regulatory, financial and technical architecture. On these bases, 9mobile has emerged from a period of uncertainty over the past two years to attain an active subscriber base of 16 million, representing a net increase of over 1 million subscribers in the last 6 weeks alone”.
“In the aftermath of the protracted mismanagement of the company, and eventual default on its loans by the previous owners, 9mobile was acquired by Teleology Nigeria Limited, after a bidding process led by Barclays Africa, with participation of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) and thirteen Nigerian banks including GT Bank, Zenith Bank, Access Bank and others.
“This process was concluded with the initial deposit of $50 million and a further payment of $251 million as settlement to the banks who took over the company. These payments as well as further due diligence and technical evaluations led to the clearance of the sale by the NCC, and handover of 9mobile to the new owners, who announced a Board on 12 November 2018 with Prince Nasiru Ado Bayero as the new Chairman”.
The company says its core strategy in the short to medium term shall be underpinned by cost efficiency, innovative product development, network efficiency and strategic technical partnerships.
“We believe that this approach towards organic growth is more sustainable in building a strong Nigerian telecom operator, which taps into the deep technical expertise of the Nigerian labour force than an approach motivated by short-term financial gain advocated by Mr. Wood and his associates”the statement added.

Teleology appoints new board of directors for 9mobile

Teleology is pleased to announce the constitution of a new Board of Directors for Nigeria's multi-award-winning telecommunication company, 9mobile, following the successful completion of the tenure of the former Board appointed by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and in fulfillment of the consequential transfer of final ownership to the new investors, Teleology Nigeria Limited. We thank all out-going members of the Board for helping to shepherd 9mobile through the critical transition phase it has passed through since July 2017 and wish them the very best in their future assignments.

For us, the composition of the new Board of Directors is another significant milestone, and this follows the issuance of final approval of no objection by the Board of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to the effect that the technical and financial bids Teleology submitted for 9mobile met and satisfied all the regulatory requirements. This is indeed the dawn of a new era in the evolution of the 9mobile brand in the Nigerian market.

The new Board of Directors are:

 1. Nasiru Ado Bayero (Chairman) 2. Asega Aliga (Non Executive Director) 3. Adrian Wood (Non Executive Director) 4. Mohammed Edewor (Non Executive Director) 5. Winston Ndubueze Udeh (Non Executive Director) 6. Abdulrahman Ado (Executive Director) 7. Stephane Beuvelet (Acting Managing Director)

The new Chairman of the Board, Alhaji Nasiru Ado Bayero welcomes the appointment stating, "as we begin this new epochal phase, we wish to thank all the employees who built this viable business. Our debt of gratitude also goes to our subscribers even as we assure them to get ready for real best-in-class additional value for their relationship with the 9mobile brand.

Without you, there could not have been a 9mobile business for us to invest in today. We will justify your confidence in our brand by making significant investments that will improve the value you get for using 9mobile." It would be recalled that the CBN in collaboration with the NCC, had in July 2017 appointed a Board of Directors chaired by Dr. Joseph Nnanna, the Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, to oversee the affairs of the company pending the completion of regulatory due diligence of the bid documents submitted by Teleology and sixteen others for its acquisition.

The bid process was superintended by Barclays Africa. But with the emergence of the Board, the long process for the acquisition of 9mobile has reached a definitive end marking the beginning of a new era for the telecommunication company.

Uncertainty clouds Facebook’s future over Instagram founders’ exit by Ukpono Etuk

Founders of Instagram, the photo-and-video app that Facebook agreed to buy shortly before its 2012 IPO, are leaving the company. It was reported that the founders, Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, grew frustrated as Facebook impinged on their autonomy, raising concerns over the future of Facebook platform.
Shares fell as much as 2.6 percent at the open and are hovering around the lowest level since April, when the stock was rocked by a data breach scandal. Meanwhile, investors in peer Snap Inc. are taking advantage of Facebook’s woes, sending shares up as much as 5.3 percent.
JPMorgan, tech analyst Douglas Anmuth, says the departures come as a surprise given Instagram’s success and its importance to Facebook; notes Instagram has played a key role in retaining younger users within Facebook platforms and in competing with Snap Anmuth expects shares to see “meaningful pressure” in the near term; speculates the departures could be related to Facebook management “pushing Instagram hard for both user growth and monetization”
Having the Instagram founders walk out the door — shortly after the WhatsApp founders grew frustrated and did the same — does not project the image of a Facebook on sure footing.
The company also seems to have been initially caught off guard by the news of the Instagram founders’ departure, first reported by the New York Times on Monday night. It took the company a little while to issue a bare-bones public statement. Again, the time lag does not project, “We got this.”But the blow to Facebook is far more than optics. Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s CEO, made a claim recently that Instagram grew far faster under Facebook’s corporate umbrella than it could have if Instagram had stayed an independent company.
Bloomberg Intelligence, Jitendra Waral and Sean Handrahan note that Instagram is “key for offsetting Facebook’s growth concerns” amid rising regulatory risks, so the resignations of the platform’s co-founders raise uncertainty on the monetization timeline and execution. The departures may also drag on Facebook’s near-term revenue-growth expectation, as they added that there might be possible margin compression at Facebook in the second half of the year as spending picks up on efforts to improve data quality and support its WhatsApp and Messenger platforms.

The Biggest And Most Expensive iPhone Ever by Ukpono Etuk

The legendary co-founder of Apple, Inc., Steve Jobs, detested big phones and wouldn’t produce them. His successor, Tim Cook, apparently felt differently; borrowed a leaf from Samsung’s playbook on big phones, and produced iPhone 6S, which is the first large-screen iPhone.
The result was the astronomical rise in Apple’s capitalization; thanks in part to the then newly-bred middle class in China. Now it seems that Apple can’t stop! One of the iPhones unveiled last week Wednesday, 12 September 2018; called iPhone XS Max, would be the biggest iPhone ever, with a diagonal of 6.5 inches. It is also the most expensive phone that Apple has ever produced. People love large-screen smartphones, the same way they love large-screen TVs. Research has shown that people with larger phones use them more.
Besides the XS Max, the XS and XR models were also unveiled at last week’s event. The XS is like the regular annual upgrade, to iPhone X in this case. This is basically the new iPhone. The XS Max is the larger version of this, or the upgrade of iPhone X Plus, while XR is a budget-friendly version of the new phone. The XR could also be seen as reincarnation of iPhone SE, which was the relatively cheap, reduced-capability, and unsuccessful iPhone. The XS has a 5.8-inch display, while XR has 6.1 inches.
The starting prices for XS Max, XS, and XR are $1099, $999, and $749, respectively, for US consumers. The XS models will have disk storage options of 64 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB; while XR will have 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB. Note that with a 5.8-inch-diagonal screen, XS is taller than the old iPhone 8 Plus, which has 5.5 inches. The prices of XS Max for 64 GB, 256 GB, and 512 GB are $1,099, $1,249, and $1,449, respectively. The corresponding prices for XS are $999, $1,149, and $1,349. As for XR, the 64 GB, 128 GB, and 256 GB phones will cost $749, $799, and $899, respectively.
The materials of the phones are stainless steel for the XS models and aluminum for XR. The XS versions have dual Rear cameras whereas XR has a single Rear camera. All Rear cameras are 12 megapixels (12 Mp). All the models have a 7 Mp Front camera. The phones also come with Face ID facial recognition for unlocking the device. The XR comes in a range of 6 colors.
The XS models have OLED screens while XR has an edge-to-edge LED screen. All the phones have a more powerful engine relative to the previous iPhone versions. Olivia Solon has this to say about the new engine, in her 12 September 2018 article in The (UK) Guardian: “All three devices also come with a more powerful ‘A12 Bionic’ processor which allows developers to build more sophisticated video games, augmented reality experiences and other apps with real-time features that couldn’t previously run on a mobile device. Apple demonstrated one app, HomeCourt that uses the camera viewfinder to track and analyze basketball shots to provide real-time feedback that can help players improve their technique.”
Apple’s Kaiann Drance is also quoted as saying “No other chip in the world would allow you to do this.” Pre-ordering started Friday, 14 September 2018 for XS and XS Max, and the devices ship on 21 September 2018. For XR, you can pre-order on 19 October 2018, while the device ships on 24 October 2018.
The device names XS and XS Max are clumsy and difficult to pronounce. They are tongue-twisters. I am surprised that Apple, with its Insanely Simple philosophy, would accept these names for their devices. Jobs must be turning in his grave. Besides the difficulty in pronouncing the names of the new phones, the names themselves are not intuitive. Of course, the confusion started last year when, instead of calling the then new device iPhone 9, it was named iPhone X. Even then, the “X” is not pronounced as “X,” but rather as “ten.” These aren’t “simple.”
In terms of which model I would recommend, the XS models are quite pricey, which makes the XR attractive; especially with a screen size that is right between those of XS and XS Max. However, the XR has fewer pixels per square meter – 326 compared to 458 for the XS models.  This means that pictures with XR will not look as sharp as they would on the XS models. With only one 12 Mp camera, XR will not offer the stabilization of images as do the XS models, which have dual cameras. (Note that dual lens cameras allow for better portraits and higher quality videos even in low light.)
The optical zoom and depth control features are also not as decent in XR compared to the XS models. Furthermore, XR is waterproof up to one meter, compared to two meters for the XS’s.  The XR also does not have 3D Touch capability that allows quick access to “deeper” phone features. If you are obsessed with having superb quality pictures, you probably will not go for XR.

EU bil: Social media have 1 hour to remove terror propagandal by Ukpono Etuk

(FILES) This file photo taken on December 28, 2016 shows logos of US online social media and social networking service Facebook in Vertou, France. Facebook said April 27, 2017 it is stepping up its security to counter efforts by governments and others to spread misinformation or manipulate discussions for political reasons. The new effort expands Facebook’s security efforts beyond “abusive” actions such as hacking and financial scams to “more subtle and insidious forms of misuse, including attempts to manipulate civic discourse and deceive people,” according to a white paper released by the world’s leading social network./ AFP PHOTO / LOIC VENANCE
The European Union on Wednesday proposed steps to force social networks and websites to remove terrorist propaganda within an hour of receiving the order from authorities, or companies like Facebook and Twitter could face massive fines.
The legislation proposed by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker marks a toughening approach after Brussels had relied on internet firms to voluntarily remove such content.
The internet has become a major tool for extremists carrying out attacks that have killed hundreds of people in European cities in recent years.
“Europeans rightly expect their Union to keep them safe,” Juncker told the European Parliament in his annual state of the union speech.
“This is why the Commission is today proposing new rules to get terrorist content off the web within one hour –- the critical window in which the greatest damage is done.”
The EU’s executive arm said that in January alone, nearly 7,000 new pieces of propaganda disseminated online from the Islamic State group, even as it has been driven out of most of its strongholds in Iraq and Syria.
The commission proposal calls for a “legally binding one-hour deadline” for firms to remove terrorist content once national authorities order them to do so.
Voluntary efforts ‘not enough’
It defines the content as that which incites or advocates committing terror offences, promotes a terror group’s activities or offers instructions for attacks.
But it also provides for means of judicial redress in the event a content provider disagrees with an order.
“Member States will have to put in place effective, proportionate and dissuasive penalties for not complying with orders to remove online terrorist content,” the commission said.
“In the event of systematic failures to remove such content following removal orders, a service provider could face financial penalties of up to four percent of its global turnover for the last business year.”
The EU joined forces with US-based tech firms in 2016 to combat online extremism.
Until now, Brussels had pushed for the industry to regulate itself, but EU officials have for more than a year given mixed reviews to firms like Facebook, Twitter, Microsoft and Google’s YouTube.
“While we have made progress on removing terrorist content online through voluntary efforts, it has not been enough,” EU Security Commissioner Julian King said in a statement.
“We need to prevent it from being uploaded and, where it does appear, ensure it is taken down as quickly as possible –- before it can do serious damage.”
