Akwa Ibom Governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel has scored another first on his development-drive for the people of the state.
This time, the premier score came to the Governor for being the first among other Governors in under the Port Harcourt Field Office of UNICEF to release the State’s counterpart funds for the Water, Sanitation And Hygiene, WASH and Nutrition programmes geared towards the reduction of Under 5 mortality rate in the state.
Wilboard Ngambi, the Chief of Port Harcourt Field Office of the United Nations Children Fund, UNICEF, made this known early today during the opening session of the Mid-Year Review Meeting of Port Harcourt Field Office of FGN/UNICEF-Assisted Programme of Cooperation held at Landmark Hotel, Port Harcourt.
According to Wilboard Ngambi, Governor Udom’s commitment towards the reduction of Under 5 mortality in Akwa Ibom State has also won a Local Government Area in the State, Nsit Atai to win the best Local Government in the South/South Certification on Open Defecation Free, ODF status from the United Nations.
While waiting for a date for the presentation of the ODF Certificate won by Nsit Atai to Governor Udom Emmanuel, the local government has been nominated for services by a UNICEF certified NGO billed for the training of selected indigenes on operations and repairs of WASH facilities to be provided for safe water supply in the area.
The Governor’s commendation was received by the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Political, Legislative Affairs & Water Resources, Mr. Nse Edem, who spoke glowingly on the commitment of Governor Udom Emmanuel towards the provision of enabling environment and facilities for uplifting the rights and survival of the child and mother in Akwa Ibom State.
Delegates from Akwa Ibom State to the meeting were led by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Economic Development, Dr. Iniobong Awak with participating MDAs including; Ministries of Information & Strategy, Health, Economic Development as well as Bureau of Pol, Legislative Affairs & Water Resources, Ak-RUWATSAN, NOA and National Population Commission.
The focus of the meeting is to assess the level of reduction of "Under 5 mortality rate" in the states under the PH Field Office, including Akwa Ibom, Delta and Rivers States.
Need it be mentioned here that, Nigeria ranks 2nd in the world on high level of Under 5 mortality with South/South Nigeria where Akwa Ibom forms an integral part, placed on medium rung.
Meeting continues tomorrow with plans to come out with strategies to scale up activities to fight Under 5 child mortality in Nigeria and the S/S in particular.
