Benue killings: Plateau Governor apologises over anti-grazing law comments

The Plateau state governor, Solomon Lalong, has apologised for his comments on the killings by suspected herdsmen in Benue state.

Punch reports that Lalong said his comments after visiting President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa on Thursday, January 11, were misinterpreted.

But on Saturday, January 13, Lalong said: “I must say that I humbly apologise for my comments,” which he said was misinterpreted."

He then registered his condolence with the people of Benue state over the loss of lives during the crisis.

He stated: “I apologise for that because neither the argument for nor against helps the matter because it involves lives.”

Lalong said that he warned his Benue state counterpart , Samuel Ortom, against implementing the state anti-grazing law recently passed into law by the state House of Assembly.

Lalong said this on Thursday, January 11, in an interview with the State House correspondents shortly after meeting President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

He said his position was that it was wrong to start implementing the law without proper alternatives.

The governor said Plateau was enjoying peace at the moment because his government brought everyone, including farmers and herdsmen, together.
