Is this okay, dating a guy who has been separated for a long time but he still wears his ring even though he said the marriage is over?

Many a times, society frowns at people entering into relationships with others who are not yet legally divorced from their spouse, this often leads to name-calling and stigmatisation of such people. 

Even though some people have a rule against dating someone who is still legally married, others have no problem dating the man/woman, wedding ring or not. 

When a marriage is over, does it really matter if the couple keep wearing their rings? Does a wedding ring actually stop one from dating even though they are already separated from their spouse? 

Some people may get confused when a man/woman who claims to be separated from his wife continues to wear his wedding ring, because it is hard to tell if such a man/woman has gotten over what they shared with their spouse.
