Justice Will Not Charge Baton Rouge Officers

Image: Justice Will Not Charge Baton Rouge Officers
The U.S. Justice Department has decided not to charge two white Baton Rouge police officers in the death of a black man whose fatal shooting was captured on cellphone video, fueling protests in Louisiana's capital and beyond, The Associated Press has learned.
Federal authorities opened a civil rights investigation immediately after the July 2016 police shooting that killed 37-year-old Alton Sterling outside a convenience store where he was selling homemade CDs.
A person familiar with the decision disclosed it to the AP on Tuesday. The person was not authorized to talk publicly about the decision and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.
The department's decision doesn't preclude state authorities from conducting their own investigation and pursuing their own criminal charges.
Two cellphone videos of Sterling's deadly struggle with two white officers, Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake II, quickly spread on social media after the July 5 shooting.
A police report says Sterling was initially jolted with a stun gun after he didn't comply with the officers' commands to put his hands on the hood of a car. The report also says the officers saw the butt of a gun in one of Sterling's pants pockets and saw him try to reach for it before he was shot.
Justin Bamberg, an attorney for some of Sterling's relatives, has said the family wanted an indictment.
Bamberg also represents relatives of Walter Scott, an unarmed black man who was running from a traffic stop in Charleston, South Carolina, when a white police officer shot and killed him in 2015. The former officer, 35-year-old Michael Slager, pleaded guilty to federal civil rights charges on Tuesday, five months after a jury deadlocked on state murder charges against him.
In Baton Rouge last summer, police arrested nearly 200 protesters following Sterling's death, which occurred a day before another black man was killed by police in Minnesota.
Racial tensions in Baton Rouge were simmering when a black military veteran from Missouri ambushed and killed three Baton Rouge law enforcement officers and wounded three others before being shot dead on July 17. The city was still reeling from the shootings when August floodwaters damaged or destroyed tens of thousands of homes in the area.
Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards immediately asked for a federal investigation of Sterling's death. He called cellphone video of the incident "disturbing, to say the least."
The videos show Sterling scuffling with Salamoni and Lake after they responded to a caller's complaint that Sterling had threatened the caller with a gun outside the Triple S Food Mart.
The two officers had Sterling pinned on his back when gunfire erupted, moments after someone yelled, "He's got a gun!"
Baton Rouge Police Chief Carl Dabadie Jr. has said Sterling was armed but didn't specify the type of weapon. The store's owner, Abdullah Muflahi, has said Sterling wasn't holding a gun during the shooting but he saw officers remove one from his pocket afterward.
As a convicted felon, Sterling couldn't legally carry a gun. Court records show Sterling had pleaded guilty in 2011 to being a felon in possession of a firearm and illegally carrying a weapon and was arrested in May 2009 after an officer confronted him outside another store where he was selling CDs.

Funmi Iyanda: Yoruba Men Don't Mind If Their Wives Cheat

The media personality made the statement in a video posted on her YouTube page. In her words: "I think a lot of things we call African culture are actually a confusion and bastardization of Victorian ideas, Victorian philosophy and Victorian culture.

This is why this Yoruba thing is very interesting because what people don't like is that they are paired on one hand to be very Western and on the other hand they behave like bushmen who are polygamous in nature" she said.

Funmi Iyanda went on to say the modern Yoruba man struggles in between traditional Yoruba values and Victorian principles. "What you get are these young men who on the surface of it look like westernized men but deep down they have these ideas of Yoruba ideas of what relationships should be.

Deep down the average Yoruba man wants to be like his great-great-great grandfather. He doesn't really mind his wife cheating as long as he doesn't know."

Ex-officer to Plead Guilty in Fleeing Black Motorist Walter Scott's Death

Image: Ex-officer to Plead Guilty in Fleeing Black Motorist Walter Scott's Death
A former South Carolina police officer is pleading guilty to violating the civil rights of an unarmed black motorist he shot and killed as the man ran from a 2015 traffic stop, according to a copy of the plea agreement obtained by The Associated Press.
The 13-page document also notes that as part of the deal, state prosecutors are dropping a pending murder charge against Michael Slager, effectively bringing to a close both parallel cases against the former North Charleston police officer.
Slager, 35, had been scheduled to appear in federal court Tuesday for motions ahead of his federal trial planned for later this month in the April 2015 death of Walter Scott.
Despite failing to secure a conviction against Slager last year when his murder trial ended in a hung jury, state prosecutors had been planning to retry him later this year.
The deal, which also drops the two remaining federal charges against Slager, drops his pending murder charge.

Uche Jombo Features In 'Kondo Game' Policeman’s As Policeman's Wife

Nollywood actress, Uche Jombo, is portraying the wife of a police officer in a yet-to-be released Nollywood flick titled Kondo Game.

In a brief telephone chat with PREMIUM TIMES on Tuesday, the 37-year-old actress described the character as one of her most challenging roles yet.

She said, “When I first read the script, I thought of how unique police barracks really are and I couldn’t wait to really see that in pictures. To really interpret the role, I had to spend some time in a popular police barracks in Lagos. I also had to interact and study the wives of some policemen. That way, I was able to learn their nuances and also understand what living in a typical police barracks feels like.”

Shedding more light on the plot, the actress who recently played a leading role in Omoni Oboli’s film, Okafor’s Law added, “Kondo Game is a feel-good movie. It is a story filled with humour, suspense and thriller about two police officers and their families.

“Following sordid stories about the sordid state of Police barracks across the country, it is likely not a choice of home many would prefer. As the wife of a police officer, I tell my experience as a barrack tenant in the new comedy movie.

“However, I am not alone in the film. I also have a neighbour and gossip partner in the person of Mercy Johnson. Both us share similar fates that would see us become pregnant and jobless at the same time in the film.”

Kondo Game, an intriguing Nollywood comedy movie, also features Nollywood stars like Jide Kosoko, Francis Odega, Mercy Aigbe, Cossy Ojiakor and Funny Bone.

The comic adventure movie depicts life in the police barracks and follows the antics of two notorious police officers, Austin and Vincent, who take the viewers on an unending laughter ride.

Portrayed by Francis Odega and Funnybone, the two police officers would later be faced with controversial tasks. With a sloppy boss played by Kosoko, to contend with, Austin and Vincent are locked between crime busting and bursting a romantic fling with a voluptuous mistress, played by Cossy Ojiakor, who runs a beer parlour in the neighbourhood.

Cossy’s exploit heightens the rib-cracking comic adventure.

Kondo Game will premiere across Nigerian cinemas in June.

Republican Candidates Urged to Copy Trump's 'Thumbs-Up'

Image: Republican Candidates Urged to Copy Trump's 'Thumbs-Up'
President Donald Trump has become a model for Republicans in the midterm election, as a new "RNC Testing Booklet" urges candidates to copy his positive image, including his frequent use of a thumbs-up.
American Majority, a conservative campaign training organization, issued a list of lessons from a "Test Booklet" of analysis from the Republican National Committee.
They found that positive images and words, along with cool colors, were more popular with donors.
They compared two images of Trump, one of a frowning Trump in black-and-white used in campaign literature before the Republican National Convention, and one of a smirking Trump giving two thumbs-up in full color.

6-Month-Old Baby Raped By Husband Of Her Mother's Friend In Kano

Here's an update on the little girl, Khadijah Bashir, who was raped when she was 6 months old by her mother's friend. The suspected culprit reportedly hired 10 lawyers to defend him in court. The traumatized baby who is now 8 months old -is being treated at a hospital in Kano after undergoing surgery as her parents are unable to hire any legal representative due to lack of funds.

Today, I visited Khadija Bashir at Murtala Muhammad Teaching hospital. She is just 8month old and was raped at 6month by husband of her mother's friend. I couldn't hold my tears when Khadija's father show me pictures of how she was brutalised by the rapist. She was bleeding and sperm was coming from her private part even after the surgery.

The culprits are currently in prison custody and they hired lawyers to cover their shame. They are also intimidating the father of the baby.

Her poor father is the one putting her medical bills and he need our assistance. Some NGOs in Abuja and Lagos have indicated their interest to help the parent. The help coming from Kano is discouraging.

We are calling on Kano state government, Civil society organisations and wealthy individuals to assist in anyway possible.

Eminem sues NZ political party over ad music

Eminem

Eminem is taking New Zealand's ruling political party to court after claiming they used his music in a TV advert without permission.

The rapper accused the National Party of using an unlicensed version of his hit song Lose Yourself in a 2014 campaign video.

Eminem's lawyer Garry Williams said the party breached copyright of a song owned by Eight Mile Style, Eminem's publisher.

Calling the song "iconic", Williams told the High Court in Wellington that rights to the work were "enormously valuable", since it had won two Academy Awards and two Grammys.

The campaign director for the National Party - led by Prime Minister Bill English - dismissed Eminem's claim when the row first erupted in 2014.
