Mitt Romney will headline two fundraisers for Arizona Republican Sen. Jeff Flake, Politico reports.
The events — a lunch in Tucson and a reception in Phoenix — will be held on June 2 and will be benefits for Flake's 2018 reelection campaign, according to Steve Voeller, the senator's adviser.
Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts and the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, is also set to host a benefit for Yellowstone National Park this week. Also in June, he will hold his annual E2 summit for donors in Park City, Utah.
Flake's opposition to President Donald Trump could draw in challengers that favor the president, such as Arizona State Treasurer Jef DeWit or Robert Graham, the former state GOP chairman.
Democratic Rep. Kyrsten Sinema is also a potential challenger, Politico reported.
"The weakest link (among Republican candidates in 2018) without question is Jeff Flake. There's a target on his back," David Waid, former Democratic Party chairman, said in March, according to the Arizona Capitol Times.
