FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe's involvement in key investigations has cast a "significant cloud of doubt" over the bureau, Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, said in a letter to deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein, according to The Hill.
"Public reports of his meeting with a longtime Clinton and Democrat party fundraiser, Governor Terry McAuliffe, and his wife's subsequent campaign for public office being substantially funded by McAuliffe's organization raise serious questions about his ability to appear impartial," Grassley, the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, said in the letter sent Tuesday.
It is not the first time Grassley has queried McCabe's motives.
In early April, he sent a letter to FBI Director James Comey requesting a detailed description of McCabe's involvement in the investigation into alleged ties between members of Trump's campaign and Russian officials and asked whether his participation raised "the appearance a conflict of interest in light of his wife's ties with Clinton's associates."
