Former President Barack Obama on Tuesday praised talk show host Jimmy Kimmel for his emotional plea to fund healthcare.

Kimmel opened his show Monday night without his typical comedy monologue. Instead, a tearful Kimmel shared the story of the April 21 birth of his son Billy. The boy was discovered to have had a heart defect soon after his birth and was rushed into emergency surgery.
Though Billy is doing well, Kimmel was critical of President Donald Trump's proposed cuts to the National Institutes of Health.
"And thank God our congressmen made a deal last night not to go along with that," he said. "They actually increased funding by $2 billion, and I applaud them for doing that.
"If your baby is going to die, and it doesn't have to, it shouldn't matter how much money you make," Kimmel said. "Whether you're a Republican or a Democrat or something else, we all agree on that, right?"
Trump and Republicans in Congress have been jockeying over plans to repeal and replace Obamacare, as the ACA is commonly known. Conservatives in the House have included an amendment in the latest bill to allow states to opt out of the ACA's requirement insurance plans cover preexisting conditions.
