John Berrigan, European Commission (EC) Director for Financial Stability, Economic and Financial Affairs, is the new troika mission chief for Portugal the organisation said on Wednesday.
Berrigan has been at the EC since the mid-90s, when he was responsible for monitoring countries, exchange policy and technical preparation for the euro.
More recently he was involved in political actions to preserve the financial stability of the eurozone.
The Irishman replaces Juergen Kroegen who has retired from the EC.
The International Monetary Fund (IMF) also said it was replacing Abebe Selassie with Subir Lall, Deputy Director of the European Affairs Department and until now mission chief for Germany and Holland.
Abebe Selassie is to move over to the institution’s African department.
On July 1, the Portuguese government asked the troika (International Monetary Fund, European Central Bank and European Commission) to postpone the 8th programme evaluation and run it along with the 9th one at the end of August/beginning of September.
Portugal is to receive a total of €78bn from the troika in a series of tranches over three years.
