ASUU: FG To Increase Federal Universities’ Fee By N350,000 by Ukpono Etuk

Dr. Ade Adejumo, the Zonal coordinator of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Ibadan Zone,on Tuesday revealed that the federal government have insist on the introduction of the increased N350,000 fees.

Adejumo said this while addressing members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the NUJ in Ibadan.
He therefore called on ASUU to inform the general public that the planned increase will lead to labour crisis in federal universities.
He said, “The union is again constrained to draw the attention of Nigerian public to an impending labour crisis in the Nigerian universities as a result of the insensitivity of the Nigerian government to issues critical to the survival of the educational system in Nigeria.

“It is no longer news that the renegotiation, which Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, promised was going to last for only six weeks, has broken down
“The union was confronted with a situation where government is bent on imposing tuition fees, beginning from N350,000, on students in the Nigerian public owned tertiary institutions.
“As to how the students will raise such money, we were told that the government will establish Education Bank, where students will access credit facilities and pay back on completion of their studies.

“The union, speaking from the background that education is the right and not privilege of every Nigerian child, made frantic efforts to make pragmatic explanations on the negative implications and the non-feasibility of this scheme to representatives of government to no avail.“

IG loses bid to stop Senate's summons over Melaye by Ukpono Etuk

[FILE] Senator Dino Melaye. PHOTO: INSTAGRAM/DINO MELAYE
The Federal High Court, Abuja, yesterday declined to grant the application by the Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, to stop the Senate from inviting him to a legislative hearing.
The Senate had in two separate letters dated April 25 and 26 summoned the IGP to appear and brief it on the circumstances surrounding the inhuman treatment that Senator Melaye suffered in the hands of police officers.
But the IGP refused to appear on both occasions, rather, he sent a delegate to represent him, an action that was condemned by the lawmakers who insisted he must appear personally.
But in a suit, he claimed that he was permitted under the 1999 Constitution, as amended, and the Police Act, to delegate a deputy inspector general of police to appear before the Senate on his behalf.
He went further to question the insistence of the Senate that he must personally appear before it.
Joined as defendants in the suit are the Senate and its President, Bukola Saraki.
The IG, through his counsel, Dr. Alex Izinyon (SAN), sought for an order to restrain them, their assigns, agents or any committee from insisting that he must appear in person to the exclusion of any of his subordinate officers.
Delivering his judgment in the matter, Justice John Tsoho, struck out the suit on the premise that it amounted to an abuse of court process.
The court further held that the IGP failed to show a reasonable cause for his inability to personally respond to the second invitation dated April 26.
Justice Tsoho further held that it was not in doubt that as at the time the Senate summoned the IGP, the subject matter for his appearance, which involved Melaye, was already a case before a competent court of jurisdiction on the issue.
According to the judge, the IGP ought to have appeared before the lawmakers and explained to them that the matter was subjudice.
The court further observed that the titling of the letter to the IGP, ‘Invitation to brief the Senate on the inhuman treatment of Senator Dino Melaye over a matter that is pending in court’, indicated that the Senate was already aware that the case was in court.
Besides, Justice Tsoho held that the IGP’s reason that he went to Birnin Gwari with the GOC on April 26, was not tenable.
“I did not see any harm that would have been caused if the IGP honoured the Senate’s invitation.
I uphold the defendants argument that the plaintiff’s suit is intended to prevent the exercise of Senate’s legitimate responsibility and therefore amounts to an abuse of court process.
“I hold that the plaintiff should have appeared before the Senate to brief it on the action of the Police in a matter before a court.
“The plaintiff ought to have briefed the Senate instead of running to the court to stop the Senate from investigating him.
“The action amounts to an abuse of court process and it is hereby struck out.”
Justice Tsoho disqualified himself from deciding another suit the IGP filed to quash a resolution the Senate passed on May 9, which declared him as an “enemy of democracy who is unfit to retain his position.
The police boss had in the suit prayed the court to bar the Senate from taking further steps to gazette the resolution which followed his refusal to appear before it.
Justice Tsoho held that since the matter was related to the one he struck out, it would serve the end of justice for the case file to be returned to the Chief Judge for re-assignment to another judge.

Nigeria @58: An Adult Or A Child Among The Comity Of States? By Ukpono Etuk

It was late Nelson Mandela that once wrote a book he entitled "Long walk to freedom " in the case of Nigeria, we are having the duplicated version LONG WORK TO FREEDOM. Pa Chinwe Achebe of blessed memory said this times ago, during his times of tireless query inquiry on the state of the nation and state of our union since 1914 and 1960. "what are we celebrating? Is it the hunger, bad governance, backwardness and setbacks, poverty, inequality, unemployment and weak institutions? "
As a young Nigerian, what our founding fathers like Ahmadu Bello, Nnamdi Azikiwe, Obafemi Awolowo etc feared and worried for in their days of struggles for our national liberation remains a state of concern till date.
Many regimes, republics and generations after independence, Nigeria is still at a crossroads to nowhere from somewhere. What an irony. A national oxymoron and a federal rollercoaster in an illusion of mirage, phantom and phantasmagoria leadership of elites quagmire since the inception of the fourth republic 1999-date.
There are so many key indicators to national development in nations across the globe. Some of which are:
1. Education and educational transformation of the nation (science and technology)
2. Health (health sector is everything a nation need)
3. Good policies and programs of the subsequent government in the nation's history.
4. Power or electric city
5. Pipe borne water
6. Good transport system
7. Steady employment opportunities for citizens
8. Workable, acceptable, implementable form of government.
Historical evidence across the globe shows that, no nation after independence developed through share goodwill or by the grace of geography, it is hard work and prospects towards the future of the nation that brings developmental progress.
Nigeria after 58 years can't conduct a mere elections without military involvement like it South Africa and Ghana counterparts in west and southern Africa regions respectively. That shows that, the electoral process of the nation is still not visible or close to reality.
The democratic expeditions of the nation after 19 years of democracy is still in shambles. The Democratic journey is still been referred to as " growing or developing " while countries like Kenya and Rwanda are doing well, Rwanda to be precise after 24 years of genocide. What then is wrong with Nigeria?
Look at the educational sector. The is a rumor of the plan to hike the tuition fees of federal universities, pending ASUU strike and students demands for good funding too.
If after 58 years, our students still receives lectures while standing or seated on floors and lecturers teaching in an over crowded classrooms, then something is terribly wrong with the nation. If in the elementary schools, people enrollment still pursued as threat, then we need an urgent surgery of the sector.
I read lately that doctors in Canada are protesting for reduction of salaries, while in Germany, teachers are the highest paid, in Nigeria, doctors and teachers are still undergoing strikes because of salaries depreciation, then it is a call for national emergency in the sector.
The Nigerian labour congress just called off it warning strike, they are requesting salaries review from #18,000.00 minimum wage to about #56,000.00 this quest shows a total neglect of the work force over time. If after this decades of independence, our institution managers are using strikes as strategy, it shows that something is wrong with the structure of the nation. It is good to note that strike is not fashionable in some countries, even in Africa. Why is the giant of Africa experiencing strikes?
The nation is in dire need of water and power, for us to be reckoned among the comity of states and work towards becoming great nations, the government must double it efforts in providing water supply and steady electricity to the populace. These duo will help in advancing our level of science and technology. Students and artisans will work extra towards developing their skills, wit and grit accordingly.
Transportation is still a challenge in Nigeria today. The government must as a matter of urgency work this out for the betterment of the nation.
Someone recently wrote and criticize Afrikaans or Third World country, in his view, we are not part of jet age continents. In jet age nations, electricity, transportation, education etc aren't a challenge and people in those countries have advanced knowledge in ICT and the use of internet. Based on this understanding, we have a lot of work to do.
Look at the policy program of our leaders since 1960. Are they policies that have moved the nation forward? Look at our debt profile despite our huge human resources, intellectual property and abundant natural resources. How well have we used them to our advantage and investiture?
Many years after colonialism or the departure of the colonial masters, the institutions left to us, what have we done like India to improved on them? Can we say that we advanced or retrogressed?
It is on record that for a country to have strong and respectful Armed Forces, it most at least produce or manufactures it arsenal or weaponry. Till date, Nigeria military wares are imported. This is not a good sign at all. We must grow from here to there to enable us compete favourably with other nations.
Our economy seems to be in a faltering position. This is a problem that we must look into as a people. What can we do in other to have a flourishing and steady economy.
Above all, I wish our burgeoning nation a hearty Independence Day celebration. I pray that the next 58 years of the nation will be far better and prosperous.
May God give our leaders the heart to know in other to build this great nation for the interest of the future generations.
SUGGESTIONS
a.  We need grand strategy as a nation. This is a national developmental plan that all government must use when in Aso Rock. It will not be business as usual. It is a road map for development equivalent to the great Chinese and the great American dreams.
b.  Restructuring or revisiting of key sectors like power, health and education. If the government overhauled these sectors. It will lead to rapid development indeed.
c.  Attitudinal change. Nigerians and all occupants of the nation must change their mindsets. The civil and public servants must be more diligent in carrying out their responsibilities. The leadership at all levels must review their commitment stands to the people and to the nation. The military and electoral management bodies must be committed to the nation not to leaders in power.

Nigeria @ 58: Oyedepo says Nigeria will rise again to glory by Ukpono Etuk

The Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, (Winners’ Chapel), Dr David Oyedepo, says Nigeria will rise again to glory.
Oyedepo made this assertion in a satellite telecast of the church’s special prayer session for the nation at 58, monitored by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Monday in Abuja.
“It was made known to me via divine revelation in 1979, while I was praying for the well-being of the country.
“The good news is that Nigeria will rise again to glory and honour,” Oyedepo assured.
The Bishop urged his congregation to continue to pray for peace and prosperity of the nation.
NAN reports that prayers were also made for God to intervene and direct the government to make policies that would be to the benefit of the people and the country.
Bishop said during the special service that everyone in power is a caretaker and should not see it as a private enterprise in other not to be kicked out by God into the forest.
The cleric warned leaders at all levels of government against being insensitive to the feelings and sufferings of Nigerian masses, urging them to repent and have value for the lives of citizens, who are God’s creations and people.
According to him, if they do not repent after this warning they would fall down for the sake of the nation.
“Those in leadership should not allow God to kick them into the forest and if they do not key into this warning of today so many of them will not live to see 2019.
“No agent of the devil will cause problems for this nation any more,” he said.
He, however, said that Nigeria is set for a turnaround and the hidden treasures of any nation dwell in the hands of the believers.
“God have a plan for a dramatic turn around for Nigeria. The hidden treasure of any nation is in the hands of the believers.
“Nigeria shall be healed and the wounds have been cured because Nigeria is not a private business of anybody but a God’s own nation,” he said.
The Bishop warned his congregation that whenever they find themselves in power that should humble themselves because no one owns the nation.
Oyedepo said that when the wicked rules the people mourn, adding that there is wickedness at the highest level in the nation.
“Our God removes kings and set up kings. Anyone that will not allow this nation to rest will be laid to rest.
“No one voted for Joseph but God set him aside for special works, God remains God of strange works and of strange acts,” he said.

Ancelotti unhappy with Napoli for loss against Juventus by Ukpono Etuk

Carlo Ancelotti criticised his Napoli side after they warmed up for Wednesday’s Champions League visit of Liverpool with a 3-1 defeat to title rivals Juventus in Serie A.
They took the lead through Dries Mertens but Mario Mandzukic nodded Juve level and then added another early in the second half.
Napoli’s hopes were effectively dashed when Mario Rui was sent off for a second booking and Leonardo Bonucci completed the scoring.
“I was angry with my team because we started strong and took the lead, but then started getting sluggish and allowed Juventus to regain their confidence,” Ancelotti said.
“I think the referee made a superficial decision. Mario Rui got the second yellow card after a good long wait to consider it.
The two yellows came from the superficiality of the referee.
“We need to improve in terms of character, consistency and experience, but we did well even when down to 10 men.
“A defeat can happen, just as Juventus can lose in Naples.
We have to keep improving under many aspects, but I am convinced we’ll be competitive right to the end.”
Liverpool fly to Naples tomorrow to prepare for Wednesday’s showdown at the Stadio San Paolo.
The Reds drew 0-0 on their only previous visit in the Europa League in October 2010.

Police intervene as crisis rocks APC governorship primary election in Enugu by Ukpono Etuk

Enugu – The governorship primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State has been rocked with crisis following disagreement by the two factions laying claim to the leadership in the state.

President Buhari presenting the Party Flag to Osun APC Gubernatorial Candidate Gboyega Oyetola accompanied by other party leaders during the Grand Finale of APC Gubernatorial Campaign Rally in Osun State on 18th Sep 2018

The disagreement led to the destruction of the public address system on Sunday, while the rear gate gate leading to the mini-stadium of University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus and venue of the event was destroyed by protesters.
The protesters who wanted to force themselves into the venue were dispersed with teargass and gunshots.
One the factions led by Mr Ben Nwoye ,who is recognised by the national leadership of the party, while the other factor is supported by the Minister of Foriegn Affairs, Mr Geoffery Onyeama is led by Chief Okey Ogbodo.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that at the centre of the crisis is the authentic list of delegates for the exercise.
Commissioner of Police in Enugu State, Mr Mohammed Danmallam, while addressing the leaders of the factions, appealed to them to conduct themselves in a civil manner.
Danmallam said that the police command had deployed enough manpower to ensure a hitch-free exercise.
The commissioner of police appealed to Nwoye to accommodate all members of the party in the spirit of fair play and participatory democracy.
He said that though only delegates were expected to vote in the primary election but nondelegates could be allowed to observe the process.
He said that aspirants from both factions of the party needed to be assured of a level playing field to ensure a peaceful exercise.
Danmallam said that the state had been very peaceful, adding that the police command would stop at nothing to maintain the status.
Earlier, Ogbodo alleged that their supporters who were among the delegates were denied entry into the venue.
He said that it would be wrong for any member of the party to be disenfranchised in the selection of their party govership flagbearer.
“I am the authentic chairman of the party in the state and no one has the right to disenfranchise my supporters,” Ogbodo said.
However, Nwoye said that he was the legitimate chairman of the party, adding that Ogbodo wanted to introduce touts who would disrupt the exercise.
He said that only duly accredited delegates would be allowed entry into the venue.
“Ogbodo is not even a delegate but he can be allowed to observe the process as a chieftain of the party,” Nwoye said.
NAN reports that as at the time of filing the reports members of the electoral committee were yet to arrive the venue due to the uncertainty surrounding the crisis.
Six aspirants are expected to contested for the ticket of the party. (NAN)
