Photos: Suspected female thief burnt to death in Cross Rivers

A suspected female thief was set ablaze by a mob in Obudu, Cross Rivers state yesterday December 29th. Facebook user, Anya Vincent, who shared the story online, said residents of the area alleged that the lady assists robbers who terrorise the area. Read what he wrote below
''This happened yesterday in obudu , Cross River State. She was burnt alive for allegedly aiding a group of robbers over time in terrorising residents and also killing innocent lives. That's their version of the story. I'm not trying to justify her actions if the story is true. I'm saying that JUNGLE JUSTICE is wrong. No one should take the law into their hands. She should have been arrested and handed over to to the police. She deserved a fair trial.
Before you burn that person alive remember that if he or she were to be your loved one, you would plead for the law to take it's course.
Most times these persons are even innocent.....Jungle justice is wrong.
I'm saying NO TO JUNGLE JUSTICE.

Buhari, lawmakers may clash again over National Assembly 2018 funds

President Muhammadu Buhari may be in for another showdown with members of the National Assembly on resumption of plenary in January if the executive fails to release funds appropriated to the federal parliament in the 2018 budget.
Some of the federal lawmakers, who spoke with our correspondents on Friday, alleged that the executive arm of government had withheld their money as a form of punishment.

The National Assembly increased its budget from N125bn allocated to it in 2017 to N139bn in 2018.
They, however, said rather than implement the N139bn allocated to them in 2018, the executive was still paying them based on the N125bn appropriated for them in the 2017 national budget.
The development worsened penultimate week, forcing the House of Representatives to summon the Minister of Finance, Aisha Mohammed, to explain the delay in the release of the funds, categorised as first-line charge.

Bangladesh Shuts Off Mobile Internet Ahead Of Election

The Bangladeshi government isn't just counting on Facebook and Twitter crackdowns to protect its December 30th parliamentary election. The country's Telecommunication Regulatory Commission has shut down 3G and 4G mobile data to "prevent rumors and propaganda" from skewing the vote. The measure took effect immediately and was poised to last through the end of election day.

Whether or not that's the main reason isn't clear -- the government doesn't exactly have a clean track record. Bangladesh temporarily shut off mobile internet access in August in an ostensible bid to curb violence at protests over road safety, but there's evidence suggesting that it wanted to stop the dissemination of media showing pro-government activists and police attacking protesters. In 2015, it also clamped down on individual messaging apps in an attempt to thwart protests.

This latest move might help prevent violence and misinformation, but it could also hinder the opposition's ability to rally support. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's administration has been accused of intimidating and imprisoning critics to help maintain power, and this could be another extension of that strategy.

World day of peace

As I wish you Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year, may I bring you excerpts of World Day of Peace Message by Pope Francis.

Good politics is at the service of peace
  1. ”Peace be to this house!”
…let this be my greeting at the beginning of the New Year: “Peace be to this house!”
  1. The challenge of good politics
Peace is like the hope which the poet Charles Péguy celebrated.[2] It is like a delicate flower struggling to blossom on the stony ground of violence. We know that the thirst for power at any price leads to abuses and injustice. Politics is an essential means of building human community and institutions, but when political life is not seen as a form of service to society as a whole, it can become a means of oppression, marginalization and even destruction.

Jesus tells us that, “if anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all” (Mk 9:35). In the words of Pope Paul VI, “to take politics seriously at its different levels— local, regional, national and worldwide— is to affirm the duty of each individual to acknowledge the reality and value of the freedom offered him to work at one and the same time for the good of the city, the nation and all mankind.”[3]
Political office and political responsibility thus constantly challenge those called to the service of their country to make every effort to protect those who live there and to create the conditions for a worthy and just future. If exercised with basic respect for the life, freedom and dignity of persons, political life can indeed, become an outstanding form of charity.
  1. Charity and human virtues: the basis of politics at the service of human rights and peace.
Pope Benedict XVI noted that “every Christian is called to practise charity in a manner corresponding to his vocation and according to the degree of influence he wields in the pólis… When animated by charity, commitment to the common good has greater worth than a merely secular and political stand would have… Man’s earthly activity, when inspired and sustained by charity, contributes to the building of the universal city of God, which is the goal of the history of the human family”.[4] This is a programme on which all politicians, whatever their culture or religion, can agree, if they wish to work together for the good of the human family and to practise those human virtues that sustain all sound political activity: justice, equality, mutual respect, sincerity, honesty, fidelity.
In this regard, it may be helpful to recall the “Beatitudes of the Politician,” proposed by Vietnamese Cardinal François-Xavier NguyÅn Vãn Thun, a faithful witness to the Gospel who died in 2002:

UNICEF: Future of children in Northeast at risk

United Nations Children’s Fund, UNICEF, has raised the alarm that the future of children living in states affected by Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast region are at risk as the terrorists continue to commit grave violations against them and governments at various levels fail to hold perpetrators accountable.
UNICEF Nigeria’s Communication Specialist, Eva Hinds, stated this on Friday in a press release made available to journalists in Abuja.
According to Hinds, armed bandits including Boko Haram factions, continue to target girls, who are raped, forced to become wives of fighters or used as ‘human bombs’.
She recalled that In February 2018, the insurgents abducted 110 girls and one boy from a technical college in Dapchi, Yobe State. While most of the children have since been released, five girls died and one is still being held captive as a slave.
While quoting Manuel Fontaine, UNICEF Director of Emergency Programmes, Hinds said: “Much more need to be done to prevent wars, and to end the many disastrous armed conflicts devastating lives of children.
“Yet even as wars continue, we must never accept attacks against children. We must hold warring parties to their obligation to protect children. Otherwise, it is children, their families and their communities who will continue to suffer the devastating consequences, for now, and for years to come.”
She called on individuals and governments with influence over parties to conflict to use that influence to protect children.
“UNICEF calls on all warring parties to abide by their obligations under international law to immediately end violations against children and the targeting of civilian infrastructure, including schools, hospitals and water infrastructure,” she added.

2019: Akwa Ibom raises alarm over police anti-terrorism unit

The Akwa Ibom State government has raised the alarm over an alleged plan by the Nigeria Police to send anti-terrorism unit to the state few weeks to the 2019 elections, saying that it was a politically motivated. A statement from the state Commissioner of Information, Charles Udoh, advised the Federal Government to send such units to the North East part of the country where insurgency was ravaging parts of the country.

Their statement   read thus:“It has come to the notice of Akwa Ibom State Government that the State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has concluded plans to set up an Anti-Terrorism Unit in the state. Clearly, judging from all indices that precede the creation of such sensitive anti-crime unit, creating an Anti-Terrorism Unit in Akwa Ibom at this time is suspect. The question is, of what use is an Anti-Terrorism Unit in one of the most peaceful states in Nigeria?

“We are concerned that the setting up of the Anti-Terrorism Unit is part of the ground work and ploy of the opposition party in the State, the All Progressives Congress (APC), to illegally intimidate, harass and arrest government functionaries and the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in the State.
“As the 2019 general elections approach and political tempo assumes a crescendo pitch, a functional Anti-Terrorism Unit in the state, will certainly arrest and detain whosoever it wills, on trumped up charges of acts of terrorism. To buttress the sinister motive of the Anti-Terrorism Unit, sources say a former Chief Security Officer to former Governor Godswill Akpabio, has been redeployed to Akwa Ibom, with tactical instructions on how to successfully execute the unholy agenda of the APC leadership in the state.
“While acknowledging that the Force retains the right to create units as it deems necessary, Akwa Ibom State government frowns at attempts by the Police hierarchy to portray Akwa Ibom as a terrorist enclave in Nigeria, by its planned establishment of an Anti-Terrorism Unit. It is the consensus of Nigerians that such sensitive section as the Anti-Terrorism Unit be activated and logistically mobilized to effectively function in parts of Nigeria where insurgency is rife, especially in the North-Eastern region, where lives of innocent Nigerians are lost on a daily basis.
“The activities of members of the Anti-Terrorism Unit will undoubtedly cause unwarranted tension among the peace-loving citizens and residents of Akwa Ibom State. This is absolutely unnecessary at this point in time especially if you take into account, the comments of the GoC 6 Division of the Nigerian Army; who during a visit to the state publicly described Akwa Ibom state as the most peaceful in the Niger Delta region. It is also on record that not too long ago, the Emir of Kano led a team of investors seeking investment opportunities to the state. The business interest of the revered Traditional Ruler in our state further underscores the importance of the peace, safety and security the current administration has engendered. Indeed, this has been a catalyst for the fast-paced development the state has witnessed since the inception of the Udom Emmanuel’s administration.
“Only recently the PDP Vice Presidential Candidate, HE Peter Obi remarked that The Economist has listed Uyo as one of the fastest growing cities in Africa. It is also imperative to add that; today, the most common remark on the lips of every Akwa Ibomite about the security situation in the state is “ I can now sleep with my two eyes closed”. How can such a state need an Anti-Terrorism Unit? The plan is therefore suspect.
“On this score, Akwa Ibom State Government requests that the State Police Command puts on hold, the plans to set up an Anti-Terrorism Unit in Akwa Ibom, as the present administration will continue its collaboration with all security agencies in the state, including the Nigeria Police, to ensure the safety of lives and property at all times.

Army speaks on Boko Haram taking over Borno

The Nigerian Army on Friday said Boko Haram terrorists had not taken over Baga town in Borno, contrary to reports in some sections of the media.
“Baga town is not in the hands of the Boko Haram. They contested it (taking over the border town) but they lost the contest,’’ Maj.-Gen. Lamidi Adeosun, the Chief of Training and Operations disclosed on the sidelines of a news conference in Maiduguri, NAN reports.

Usman added the Nigerian Air Force component of the Operation Lafia Dole was mobilised to engage the fleeing terrorists.

A policeman accused of murdering an Australian in Minneapolis last year has asked to borrow a squad car to recreate the shooting Friday, when lighting conditions are expected to be the same.
Mohamed Noor shot Justine Damond as she approached his car, having alerted police to what sounded like a rape taking place in a dark alley behind her home.
His attorneys want to replicate the lighting conditions from the evening of the shooting, according to US media reports, and have requested a police cruiser for Friday evening — when the moon will be in the same phase as during the night of the July 2017 incident.
It was unclear exactly what the testing would entail or where it would be conducted.
Noor shot Damond once from the passenger seat of the police cruiser. His partner told investigators they had been startled by a loud sound moments before they saw a figure approach them.
The shooting provoked outrage in the United States and in Damond’s native Australia, and Noor was fired and charged with second-degree and third-degree murder, as well as second-degree manslaughter.
The 40-year-old had moved to the US to marry her American fiance, Don Damond, whose name she had already legally adopted.
Her relatives and the Australian government demanded an explanation, while protests in Minneapolis led to the resignation of the city’s police chief.
Noor’s jury trial is scheduled to begin April 1.

Dino Melaye is wanted for an attempted murder case that happened in July - Police

Dino Melaye is wanted for an attempted murder case that happened in July - Police

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has explained why its officers are currently laying seige outside the Abuja home of Senator Dino Melaye.
A statement from Police spokesman, DCP Jimoh Moshood, said Dino was declared wanted by the force to answer questions regarding an attempted culpable homicide.
According to Jimoh, Dino and his thugs had tried to kill a police sergeant Danjuma Saliu while he was on duty in Kogi state on 19th July 2018.  The police spokesperson said Dino has been invited by the Kogi state police command to answer questions regarding this case but has bluntly refused to honor their invitation.
“The Police operatives currently in the residence of Senator Dino Melaye are to effect his arrest to answer to the case of attempted culpable homicide on the shooting of a Police Officer, Sgt Danjuma Saliu, attached to 37 Police Mobile Force (PMF) while on duty at a stop and search point along Aiyetoro Gbede, Mopa Road in Kogi state.
“The above offence was committed by Senator Dino Melaye and his armed thugs in Kogi State on the 19th July, 2018 when they shot and wounded a police officer, Sgt Danjuma Saliu, attached to 37 Police Mobile Force (PMF) while on duty at a stop and search point along Aiyetoro Gbede, Mopa Road in Kogi state.
“The Police Officer is yet to recover from the gunshot injury he sustained during the attack and still under intensive medical care. The Police investigators have written the Clerk of the National Assembly for Senator Dino Melaye to report at Kogi State Police Command, CIID, Lokoja for him to answer to these offences against him under investigation in Kogi State Police Command but he has bluntly refused to report himself to the Police.
“The Police operatives will continue to be in wait at the residence of Senator Dino Melaye until he surrenders himself for arrest. The offence for which Senator Dino Melaye is being investigated is capital in nature and not compoundable. The Force will not tolerate attack on its personnel by any individual no matter how highly placed. The law must take its course,” Moshood said.
He added that members of the public will be kept informed on further development in the investigation of the matter.
Recall that Dino took to his twitter handle earlier today to raise alarm after sighting a number of police officers outside his premises.

Udom: Providing critical infrastructure for economic transformation

Lack of critical infrastructure has been the bane of economic development in Nigeria for decades. This has remained an intractable problem that successive governments at the federal and state levels have had to tackle, with varying degrees of success.
The imperative of infrastructure as the bedrock for socio-economic development (or advancement, as the case may be) could be seen from the point of view of the fact that at no stage can it be considered to be enough, even in developed countries where provision of infrastructure is a continuous process, despite the availability of what is generally accepted as the best.
It is a different kettle of fish in a country like Nigeria with very high infrastructure deficit brought about by many years of neglect, as well as the proclivity to spend tax payers’ money on white elephants projects that have no socio-economic benefits to the people. It is one of the reasons the country is littered with abandoned projects. Addressing infrastructure deficit, therefore, is a process that can’t have an end.
Udom Emmanuel Governor Akwa Ibom State
This is the fact that Udom Emmanuel established when he assumed office as Akwa Ibom State Governor on May 29, 2015. The two previous administrations in the state had laid the foundation for infrastructural development in two key areas – power and roads – respectively. In order to get the state ready for the industrial and economic transformation that he envisioned, he needed to improve on those two areas and take them to a higher level.
The governor identified power as being central to the realisation of the objective of having a strong economic base, and went to work to improve on what he met on assumption of office. Within one year of his tenure, he secured approval from the federal government for generation of additional 685 megawatts of electricity from the Ibom Power Plant at Ikot Abasi, built by the administration of Obong Victor Attah, the first elected governor in the current dispensation. The effort saw the injection of 2 x 15MVA and 33/11KVA into power transmission in the state.
The government also rehabilitated facilities that are strategic to power supply at Ekim-Itam, Mkpat Enin and Ikot Ekpene. Today, between 85 per cent and 90 per cent of villages and communities in the state are connected to the national grid, while some sections of the state enjoy between 18 and 20 hours of power supply daily. And in order to ensure the state remains an island of constant power supply during periods of national outage, the government has installed what is known as “dead bus technology” in the transmission system. The system would guarantee regular power supply in the state, even when the entire country is in darkness. Akwa Ibom is the only state in the country with such facility.
The government has obtained a financial investments decision (FID) from the World Bank for the construction of a 540 megawatts Qua Iboe Power Plant at Eket. The project, which is being promoted by Qua Iboe Power Plant Limited (QIPPL), an initiative of ExxonMobil, is estimated to cost $1.1 billion, with an additional $500 million for gas to boost power generation in the country.
Governor Udom Emmanuel said at the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding for the project that it would solve the country’s gas challenges, and commended QIPPL for its commitment to its execution. “I am always glad to be associated with something that will drive employment, provide the bases for industrialization and I think the QIPP is just one of them”, he said.
Mr. Brian Herlihy, Chief Executive Officer of the company, commended Governor Emmanuel for his support for the project, and assured that construction of the power plant would commence before the end of 2018. He said the project was aimed at establishing a fruitful relationship with the neighbouring communities and also developing sustainable programmes for accelerated socio-economic development in the state and the country at large. He also said more than 20, 000 indigenes of the state would be employed during construction of the plant.
The various initiatives are all geared towards making Akwa Ibom truly independent in power generation – a necessary requirement for creating a conducive climate for investment, which the Udom administration has started delivering in the state.
“I said our duty will be to industrialize Akwa Ibom and you cannot talk about industrialization if you don’t give power to the people”, Udom said. “You must create an enabling environment”.
The governor’s intervention in critical infrastructure has made it possible for investors to begin to look in the direction of Akwa Ibom in a manner the state had not witnessed before his assumption of office. This is evident in the number of investments that have come into the state in the last three years, which have been responses to the favourable investment climate the administration’s policies have engendered in the state.
“The government has been fantastic in terms of infrastructural support,” said Mr. Tolulope Ogunkolade, MD/CEO of Akwa Ibom Electricity Metering Solutions Company, one of the industries Udom has attracted to the state.”
“The government also facilitated electricity supply. The intervention of the government has also led to improved company/community relations”.
At the time Udom took office, infrastructural development in Akwa Ibom – mostly road construction and rehabilitation – was concentrated in Uyo, the capital. Not much attention was paid to other parts of the state, including the hinterland. The governor realized that in order to make the state attractive for investment, there was need to make all parts accessible. He therefore embarked on massive road construction and rehabilitation to open up the state, in such a way that today, there is no part of the state that cannot be reached with ease under two hours – from one end to the other.
At the last count, the Udom administration has constructed 1, 701 roads and 35 bridges, while more are currently under construction across the state. The administration has had to pump more money into completion of the 25-kilometer Uyo-Ikot Ekpene Road that was left uncompleted by the immediate past administration, despite the fact that there was full budgetary provision for it , and on paper, the road was supposed to have been completed. The strategic importance of the road lies in the fact that it is the main highway that connects the South East geo-political zone with Akwa Ibom and Cross River states.
Other roads that are of strategic economic importance include the 20-kilometer Ikot Oku Ikono Road; 29-kilometer Etinan-Ndoneyo Road, and the 12-lane Eket-Ibeno Road that has a connection to the Ibaka Deep Sea Port.
The road to the deep sea port is of paramount importance to the government. It is one of the outlets that would ensure easy flow of traffic when the port is completed and becomes operational, because of the volume of business Ibaka is expected to generate in the Gulf of Guinea.
“We want to be different from Lagos by providing roads so that we will not have another Apapa scenario along the sea port”, Ephraim Inyang-Eyen, Commissioner for Works, told reporters in Uyo. “We want to prevent traffic snarl. Before December, we will intensify efforts in doing the road. Already, we are filling the sand and building bridges on the 5.5 kilometre road. Already, nine kilometers have been sand filled. It will be commercialized. Tolls will be collected and the money collected will be used for maintaining the road”.
The government would have achieved more in terms of road construction if not for numerous court cases that delayed many of the road projects over compensation issues arising from demolition of properties and encroachment on farmlands. At a stage it had 189 court cases to contend with. Udom achieved peaceful resolution of many of the cases to get the work done.
“We needed to have peace to be able to construct the roads”, Inyang-Eyen said. “The governor never intended to abandon any road project. But some owners were using private valuers to cause problems”.
Udom resorted to peaceful settlement of the disputes to ensure political and ethnic motives were not read into delay of projects, since his mandate covers the entire state, and not certain sections or ethnic units.
“I am not playing politics with the development of the state”, the governor said. “Our development efforts cut across the local governments and senatorial districts. Ours is not a government of ethnicity. Our projects are of high quality. But the speed of delivery may have been slow due to financial challenges”.
The government has embarked on construction of a second runway for the Ibom International Airport, in addition to an upgrade of its main runway to Category 2, to meet international standards. Akwa Ibom is the only state in the country that owns and maintains an airport independent of the federal government, even though aviation is on the exclusive list. The government pays federal agencies operating at the airport, including the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, despite the fact that the federal government has no hand in its maintenance.
From inception, the Ibom Airport was powered by 12 electricity generating sets, with N25 million spent every month on diesel only, apart from the high cost of maintenance. The Udom administration has installed two transformers of 12 megawatts each to guarantee constant power supply to the airport. This is in addition to 22 compact transformers that have also been installed to ensure there is nothing like power outage, even for a second.
The government has completed work on the Idongesit Nkanga Secretariat Annex, to provide a more conducive working environment for the state’s civil servants. It is one of the ways the Udom administration has been able to guarantee a healthy government-labour relationship in the state. Akwa Ibom is one of the few states in the country where labour crisis is a rarity.
The government is currently tackling the perennial flooding in Uyo, whenever it rains. The flood control project on Nsikak Eduok Avenue is one of the initiatives designed to eliminate flooding in the state capital, to give the city a more welcoming ambience.
Governor Emmanuel has promised to raise the bar in provision of infrastructure in his second term. This is because in his consideration, the state is still far from attaining the height he envisages, against the background of the conducive environment he is trying to create, to make businesses thrive.

Before anyone knew what was happening, thousands of people in Nigeria started uploading jaw dropping selfies from every angle. These selfies went viral over social media and soon everyone wanted in!
It did not take long before this new type of selfie went viral worldwide!

What is it?

It’s the brand new Drone X Pro, a breakthrough in drone technology that's made so that anyone can fly it with ease. It's makes taking breathtaking selfies fun and easy!

Two German engineers found that drones were heavy and hard to travel with.
So, they put their heads together and designed an ultra-compact, lightweight drone, with all the benefits of a top HD model.
The Drone X Pro is born—it’s easy to control, stable and it can live-stream and record to your phone.
People starting using it to take 'the ultimate selfies' - the results are astonishing...

How does Drone X Pro work?

We were surprised by how fast and easy it was to get up and running! Start by installing an app (just scan the QR code in the manual). It’s take just minutes.
After that, just install the battery in your drone and launch the app. You’re now ready to fly your Drone X Pro!
Here's the best part: flying is extremely easy. Flying the drone is smooth and natural as riding a bike. Our friend's son came over the office, and he figured how to fly the drone in just minutes. It’s remarkable how stable and smooth the controls are!

Formula 1: Kimi Raikkonen's world is a very different place

x-ray

The private area of Singapore's main airport often caters for celebrities and the wealthy, preparing for security checks - just one more easy step before boarding their private jets.
It is usually light work for the security staff. But not during one particular evening in 2008.
A man places his bags on the conveyor belt. As everyone else expects him to walk through the scanner, he sees his belongings just about to disappear and has a brilliant idea. He jumps onto the moving conveyor belt himself. Panicked and raging security staff are brought to life by the unusual turn of events, expecting to apprehend a maniac.
Instead they turn him over and are faced with Formula 1 driver Kimi Raikkonen, curious that the scanning equipment would give him "an image of the precise details of his body, and his bone structure in particular".
The Singapore staff "suggest leg irons and a tough interrogation instead".
During a lengthy career spanning the eras of Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, he may not stand out for the greatest race results. But there is far more to the Iceman beyond his cold persona.
He has been called the 'least bothered man in sport', but his move to Sauber for 2019 confirms his enthusiasm for racing is very much alive.

Drama as lie detector exposes a bride to be

A bride-to-be found herself in a complicated situation after her fiance made her take a lie detector test which exposed her 5-year secret affair with another man who she met at the gym.

When the results were being read to the couple, it was revealed that lady had unprotected sex a few days ago with the fitness trainer.
While trying to deny she cheated on her partner, the lie detector experts disclosed that her husband-to-be hired them to secretly follow her around. While still trying to prove her innocence, the fitness trainer was then invited into the room where the couple were arguing.

The argument got a bit fierce. The fitness trainer started accusing the lady of playing him for 5-years while she was engaged to someone else. The confused lady can be heard saying she's in love with him while her heartbroken fiance stood next to them.
The video ended with the fiance walking away from the room after he demanded the ring he gave her be returned.
